#1 - Friend of a Friend
It's true - sometimes
who you know is more important than
what you know. Keep an ear open at family events and around friends who have jobs you like. Not only can you catch an early lead on your competition that's reading the Want Ads, you can ask your contact for a personal introduction. If you've had a good relationship, there's even a chance they'll vouch for you. Shoe in!
#2 - Volunteer
Non-profit companies have a mission to make the world a better place, each in their own way. From saving whales to providing health services for the poor, non-profits are the place to earn good karma. Dedicate some time and energy to a cause you believe in, and you just might wind up with a job offer in the field of your dreams. Regardless, volunteer activities round out a good resume' no matter what career you follow.
#3 - Create a Job
Know any stores that close too early? Maybe you're the evening manager they've been missing. Any time you're frustrated running errands, ask yourself if there's it's a hidden opportunity - could it be someone's job to smooth this problem out? Take your ideas to the owner. Your next job might not even exist till you pipe up!
#4 - Freelance
Artistic? Design snappy new menus for your locally owned restaurants. Paint without a mess? Shopkeepers will be glad to toss you a couple bucks to cover up graffiti. Completely lacking any skill? Every town has a short supply of window washers. Point is, you're surrounded by things that need to be done but don't warrant a full-time employee. Spot a gap and fill it.
#5 - Save the Boss's Life
Now, no one is suggesting that anyone should be purposely put in danger. But if you just happen to save a CEO's family from certain doom at the hands of an evil mad scientist, don't be shy to ask for an interview after the dust settles. This holds true for doomed pets, bicycle tires, and any other situation that results in a hiring manager asking, "How can I ever repay you?"
